A Brief History of San Marcos
San Marcos has a story that stretches back centuries. According to local legend, Spanish missionaries from Mission San Luis Rey came upon a fertile valley on April 25, 1797, the feast day of Saint Mark, and named it "Los Vallecitos de San Marcos," meaning The Little Valleys of Saint Mark. The area changed hands several times through the rancho era before American settlement took hold.
In 1883, John H. Barham founded the first formal town in the area, which by 1884 had a post office, blacksmith, feed store, and weekly newspaper. In 1887, the San Marcos Land Company purchased much of the surrounding land and divided it into tracts, attracting homebuilders to the scenic hills.
Farming was the backbone of the early economy, with dairies and poultry farms eventually taking center stage. A turning point came in 1956 when water from the Colorado River arrived, spurring rapid population growth and the founding of many small businesses. San Marcos was officially incorporated as a city on January 28, 1963.
Today, San Marcos is home to over 20 educational institutions, earning it a reputation as the education hub of North County San Diego. It has grown from a quiet agricultural valley into one of the most dynamic and family-friendly cities in the region.
